In May 2025, a new tradition was born from a simple provocation:

What if we supported nature like we do with say a football team?

Who would you support? What would your chants be? Who would be your bitter rivals?

Having created club badges for common hedgerow and shrub species found in the UK, the idea was beginning to materialise.

It was time to do the official LIVE draw on my Instagram page where we established which teams would be ‘playing’ each other.

My followers were officially confused and intrigued.

Every day there would be two fixtures.

My audience would vote for their favourite of the two for each fixture.

The winner would move on in the competition. The loser - out!

Over the course of the merrie month of May, allegiances and rivalries began to emerge.

People were engaged.

Hedgerow species had fans.

Followers of my page openly stated that they hated football but loved being involved in this competition.

It turns out that the plant species that we see everyday had certain soft spots in people’s hearts.

See you in May 2026 for the second instalment of the most exciting tournament you never thought you needed.
